Welcome! I not only say welcome to you (you who might someday read this). But welcome to me as well~ to the Blogosphere. This is my first attempt at connecting with this style of communication. Though excited, I’m frankly a little intimidated. I guess I’m intimidated for several reasons. First of all, I’ve never really fancied myself as a prolific writer. I’ve never been able to express myself eloquently in written form though I do it on a weekly basis. I’m a preacher so I write my sermons out and then deliver them. Communication= written and spoken. I love to preach, yet I suppose I sell myself short when it comes to the writing part. I’m a little intimidated as well, because for the last couple of years I’ve been reading some pretty cool blogs and these folks seem to have some pretty intriguing stuff to say.
Yet even with a few intimidations, I still jump into the “sphere.” I jump in because I have some important stuff to talk about as well. The stuff I want to talk about has to do with multi-culturalism in our churches. I think it is high time for a blog that is devoted to the church becoming a place of rich diversity. Martin Luther King Jr. was right when he said that the most segregated hour of the week is Sunday.s @ 10:00. I don’t know how it affects you, but I think that Christ envisioned a church where all people regardless of their race, color and economic status could come together to worship the One King of all creation.
A passion for Multi-cultural ministry has been brewing in my spirit for about 20 years now. A passion for perpetuating multi-culturalism in churches has been a reality for us at Westbrook for 10 years. Why? Because I believe, agree with and hold to the statement made by the writers of United By Faith (Yancy, Emerson, Yu) that “wherever possible, churches should be multi-cultural.”
So that’s what in my crawl as we use to say where I grew up. I think the day is upon us in the church, to start thinking about this. Even more, I think it is time for us in the church to start, moving toward this reality. Come join us!
